The Transportation Zone is devoted to many of the extraordinary inventions which have enabled Man to the conquer time and space. The world has steadily grown smaller, its people ever closer together by improved methods of transportation -Official Guide Book of the New York Would Fair 1939 (Cotter 25)
At this fair, trains were heavily showcased. The newest form of movement was air-travel. Automobiles were making a comeback after the depression due to new highways being built (Cotter 25). The major car companies, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, pushed the idea the car would eventually become the future of transportation for the middle class (Eshelman 3). For example, Ford featured a "road of tomorrow". Visitors could "drive" in sample cars of the future (Eshelman 3).
The highlight of the Transportation Zone would have to be the Futurama ride. In the General Motors pavilion was a prediction of a city in 1960. The model presented clean, wide open cities and suburbs, the ideal future of the time (Cotter 30). Often, the line for this ride almost wrapped around the building twice (Cotter 31).
Those who loved trains would be enthralled at the exhibits displayed. They included both historical engines and the newest additions from across the globe (Cotter 27).
